Obituary for Krishna (Kris) Paighoo Ramnawaj

Krishna (Kris) Ramnawaj died suddenly and peacefully on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the age of 69.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Vicki; children: Shamilla Ramnawaj (Robin Pelletier) and Sabrina Buffie (Chris); grandchildren: Elena and Gabriella Buffie and Teya Pelletier; mother-in-law Helene Booth; Siblings: Samlal, Dhana, Peaceful, Pola, Leela, Rajo, Rubby, Soogrim, Kali and so many beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Kris was predeceased by his parents and by two sisters, Dolly and Cusum. Kris was born in Trinidad, West Indies and moved to Winnipeg in 1970. His first job in Canada was at Maharaj Restaurant and his love for cooking lasted for as long as he was able. Everyone loved the annual New Year’s Day Curry-Fest that he would start preparing two weeks in advance. Kris met Vicki on a cold night in 1971 and they were married and started their family in 1972. Kris eventually started working for the City of Winnipeg in 1976 as a cleaner and worked his way up to retire as Building Services Superintendent in 2008. Along the way, Kris earned his 4th class Power Engineering Certificate and learned more about buildings and caring for them than we’ll ever know. Kris taught us the importance of selflessly serving others. Kris was known for being a go-to guy when anyone needed a hand and a hands-on guy overall (cooking, photography, stained glass, wine-making, renovations, etc). Most of his free time was spent helping others, at Habitat for Humanity, at church, his family, or simply when anyone asked. Kris also learned about gardening at a young age in Trinidad and brought that love to Canada. He would start a greenhouse of plants every spring that invariably resulted in a blooming vegetable and flower garden where there was always a surplus to share with family and friends (Hibiscus plant or hot peppers anyone?). He and Vicki also spent time travelling and enjoyed many visits back to Trinidad over the years to visit family and friends. In May of 2012, Kris was helping a friend with a renovation, when a fall resulted in him having to learn to live life in a wheelchair and limiting his movement in his ever-trusty hands. After that time, Kris’s main joy was spending quality time with his grandkids and visiting with his friends. The family would like to give unending thanks for the love and care provided to Kris by his Heathcare Attendants who loved him as family, to his case worker and to the countless friends and family who supported him.
