Obituary for Lorraine Margaret Schmidt

Print
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorraine Margaret Schmidt. Lorraine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a loyal friend. Lorraine was born in Simpson, Saskatchewan on January 22nd, 1931. Lorraine is survived by her son Lloyd and wife Susan and her granddaughters Ashley (Ian) and Sarah. Last summer, Lorraine was blessed with her first great grandchild Logan. She enjoyed spoiling him with numerous gifts and hand knit sweaters and blankets.
Lorraine grew up in a large family with seven siblings. She is survived by brothers Kenny and Denny DeClercq. Lorraine was predeceased by her husband Leo and son Ron. Additionally, she was predeceased by her parents, brother George and wife Renna, brother Ray and wife Marie, sister Jo and husband Bill, sister Louise and husband Bob, sister Linda and sister-in-law Rita. Lorraine enjoyed spending time with all of her family – and had many wonderful nephews and nieces.
Lorraine ventured to Winnipeg in 1950 and got a job at Safeway and the Hudson’s Bay. She enjoyed gardening, growing tomatoes, and making all kinds of homemade treats. Grandma spent many days taking care of her granddaughters Sarah and Ashley – taking them out for lunch, to appointments, and to sports. Grandma had such a positive influence on her granddaughter Ashley that homemade pickles and salsa are still available for the family. Grandma and Sarah enjoyed going out for lunch, shopping, and the occasional glass of wine.
Lorraine met her husband Leo and were married October 4th, 1952. They purchased a home on Morier Avenue where they had two wonderful sons. Lorraine always let Lloyd have the boys over and listen to Rock and Roll - pretty loudly- and provided snacks. She loved both her sons unconditionally. Lorraine was a very hard worker and got her driver’s license in her mid forties. She was a talented baker and made excellent homemade pies.
In 1999, Lorraine and Leo moved to Kenbur Gardens where Lorraine developed many friendships especially with Ivy her partner in fun. Lorraine enjoyed all the “club” activities and served as treasurer for the executive.
With respect to Lorraine’s wishes a small family burial was held on Friday, January 11th at Brookside Cemetery where Lorraine joined her husband Leo. Lorraine’s last days were made very comfortable by the wonderful and caring staff and volunteers at the Grace Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Hospice.
