Remembering Neil
A third generation funeral director, Neil sold his controlling interest in the funeral home on Sherbrook Street and opened Neil Bardal Inc. at 984 Portage Avenue in 1980. He then purchased Brooklawn Crematorium at 3030 Notre Dame Avenue in 1982. Neil’s vision that cremation would allow families more choices, lead to the fulfillment of his dream in 2008 with the expansion and completion of the new Funeral Home and Garden of Memories on Notre Dame.
He served as Registrar for the provincial Board of Administration under the Embalmer’s and Funeral Director’s Act from 1979 to his retirement in 2009. Neil’s wish for a provincial school was the drive behind the creation of the Western School of Funeral Service in 1980.
Neil’s community involvement was wide and diverse. Over the years Neil enjoyed many affiliations, most recently he was president of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg and board member of Cycle On Life for the Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
His energy, drive and commitment were infectious to those who worked with him on the numerous boards and committees. ‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well’, were the words Neil lived by, much to the dismay to those who just didn’t get it. It was this drive that lead to the completion of the manuscript for his first book.
A proud Icelander, Neil’s dedication was recognized by the Government of Iceland with his investiture into the Knight’s Cross of the Order of The Falcon in 2000, and by the Province of Manitoba with becoming a recipient of The Order of Manitoba in 2006. A scholarship in his name was created by the I.O.D.E in 2008.
